Mashable new design includes selctive Sharing

Mashable launched today it's redesigned website. The one thing that captured my eye the most was actually how they implemented sharing. Not only do they have the classical sharing counts and buttons for the page, but also for quotes and images. Great idea, since we always want to just share a bit of the content or maybe a image etc. Well done.

International Conference Website Velo-City 2012

The Client

Velo-city Global is the world’s premier international cycling planning conference. The four day event offers delegates from around the world a chance to share best practices for creating and sustaining cycling-friendly cities, where bicycles are valued as part of daily transport and recreation. The conference is held every year in a different city - 2012 was Vancouvers turn.

The Brief

A conference website with strong focus on showing the advantages of visiting Vancouver, the most bikable city of north america. Easy to navigate program and integrated booking engine. Congress World, the local event manager, also asked that the bespoke booking engine should be re-usable for future conferences.

The Solution

The whole website design is driven by the idea of horizontal movement - just like on a bike. The colors are bright and the typography modern and clean. The Navigation is compact and helps navigate through the vast amount of pages.

The program listing is completely CMS driven and easy to navigate. This made it easy to update for the conference organizers while maintaining a coherent look.

The bespoke booking engine with payment gateway is fully customizable to any type of attendees, additional packages, date rages and look.

Use Photoshops channel mixer to make change color of objects

This is just a quick tip. I had to quickly change the color of a red seat into a white one … after first trying to desaturate and lighten up the whole scene I remembered that I could try the channel mixer. And guess what, you can simply select the preset (or adjust your own settings) and the red seats are magically white.

Burcon Nutrascience Mobile Website

The Client

Burcon is a pioneer in the development of novel vegetable-based protein ingredients.

The Brief

Burcon needed to make it's website accessible for mobile phones. Only specific sections of the website should be available.

The Solution

Since the original CMS didn't allow for a mobile design we opted for a dedicated mobile site on the m.burcon.ca domain. This domain is feed for the general pages through a separate CMS. Only the news section is crawled from the desktop website. The mobile website also features a stock chart and the video section has been optimized to be viewed on all mobile platforms, including Blackberry.

Visitor personalized responsive website for Cummins Westport

The Client

Cummins Westport Inc. designs, engineers, and markets 6 to 12 litre spark-ignited automotive natural gas engines for commercial transportation applications such as truck and buses.

The Brief

The old website was dated and didn't reflect the quality of the products build by CWI. Another main goal was to promote the educational section of the website. CWI has become sort of a thought leader in natural gas engines and the educational section is an important part of the communication strategy of CWI and has been expanded with a video section.

The Solution

Next to a clean website design with a responsive mobile layout we included also a backend solutions which helps us promote content to the visitors based on their search terms. Over 70% of the visitors to the CWI website have searched for natural gas engines and related technologies on a search engine before reaching the website. We use the search terms to personalize the landing page for each visitor. The new educational section has been named "Natural Gas Academy" and features next to the articles a video section with chapter support available both on desktops and mobile devices.

All Webstandards in one place

A couple of big players in the web space finally put their head together and collected all the web standards on one website. Easier to read than the w3c website (which is also part) and I hope that this will help to lower the prefix jungle.#webstandards   #html5   #css

Teardown reveals Android smartphone inside Entertainment Weekly's print ad The latest print edition of Entertainment Weekly includes an interactive ad for the CW network, replete with an embedded LCD that displays live tweets and video. Turns out, there's a smartphone inside, too. Mashable this week conducted a thorough teardown of the ad to uncover a dated, yet fully functional 3G handset nestled between two thick pages. Twitter doesn't want to become the Identity Service of the Internet

Twitter is closing down it's API. After cutting links with LinkedIn now they cut the cord on Instagram. This will happen more often. It's a shame, because Twitter was on it's way to became the identity service for the internet. Deep integrations from Apple and numerous online services brought Twitter to the attention of the millions, but know it looks like that they want to become just another content service. Ask Yahoo and Myspace how well that went.

I can see how the ambitions can drive you to become more than just the infrastructure - but there lies also the trap.

It's no secret that the value of any social network (yes you can argue that Twitter is not a social network) lies in the users and their content, and if the social network itself tries to become the content player, then it starts to be confusing.

I think that Twitter will go down the path of Yahoo/Aol/[insert media conglomerate without vision here] if they continue this route, not just strategy wise, but also business wise.

Google brings handwriting to the mobile web search

I used the Google Gesture App a little bit and liked it, but I found it tedious to go into an app to do the searching. Google know has brought this feature to the mobile web on their search page. Way cool. #google   #search   #html5   #mobile

Enterprises and Businesses will love the Metro-Interface ... in Windows 9

While I think that businesses are going to skip Windows 8, I don't think that Metro will be going away. I would even say that the desktop will be gone completely in Windows 9 and that businesses will love it.

Google Analytics with better Google Play Integration

Many App Developers use Google Analytics to measure user interaction on their mobile Apps. That's nice and there will be new features coming for this purpose, but the biggest news is that you can mease "Google Play traffic sources". That is something you cannot do in the Appstore and will give a huge advantage to developers on the Android Platform using this service. To know where your customers/users are coming from will help to market the apps better, especially in the crowded app stores.

Go ahead an read all the new features over at the Google Analytics Blog.
